In food and beverages, a functional ingredient is something added with the goal of adding a new benefit or boosting an already known positive health effect.

While pure tart cherry juice is linked to many positive health outcomes on its own including reduced muscle soreness and better sleep, the addition of functional ingredients adds to these known outcomes- a win-win! Check out these functional ingredients Cheribundi uses to boost your recovery:

Sleep Superstars:

  • Valerian root:  Many studies around valerian show promise for this compound and its calming, positive effect on sleep. Scientists think this may have to do with the root's impact on neurotransmitters that plays a key role in sleep.
  • L-theanine: This amino acid may help support a restful night’s sleep by reducing feelings of anxiety and stress. Like valerian root, researchers believe l-theanine impacts neurotransmitters in the brain.

Immunity Heroes:

  • Echinacea: flowering plant similar in appearance to a daisy, echinacea has been shown to reduce your chance of catching the common cold. More research needs to be done on its ability to shorten the duration of a cold, however, so it is best to supplement with echinacea before the first sneeze to help illness away.
  • Vitamin C: Likely the vitamin most associated with immunity, Vitamin C has strong antioxidant properties. It's also a vital part of the immune system and not enough in our diets could lead to a weakened immune response to viruses and infections.
  • Vitamin B Complex: Usually referring to 8 different vitamins, vitamin B complex plays a crucial role in metabolism and B12 and folic acid specifically are crucial for red blood cell production. Getting enough of this group of vitamins also helps support immune function in the body.

While a functional ingredient isn’t a cure all, research does show some benefit to these compounds in our diets for specific health benefits, which is why you can find them in some of Cheribundi's products. Just be sure to always check with a doctor before adding these into your routine since they could react with medications and supplements.
